I’m not okay, but I’m doing great.
An oxymoron if there ever was one. And yet…
It can also be true.
In therapy you’re taught to notice feelings. To give them names. To give them voice. To sit with them. To feel them deeply.
It’s this process that helps you move through them.
The ocean is cold when you dip your toe in. But when you immerse your body in it for a few minutes, your body will adjust and the water will feel warm.
And so it is with emotions.
In meditation you’re taught to notice your thoughts. You don’t judge them. You don’t try to make them go away. You just observe them coming and going.
You are the sky and the thoughts are the clouds, just passing by and saying hello.
The more you do this, the more distance you put between yourself and your thoughts. They’re still there and still a part of you.
But the sky is so much bigger than just the clouds.
We can simply be okay. Or not okay. And we can still be great amidst either.
Because we are not our thoughts. And we are not our emotions. They are part of us, but they are not us.
Life has highs and lows, beauty and darkness, good days and bad days, struggle and joy.
And the point at which we accept and recognize this as the structure and DNA of life itself, then we see how it’s possible…
…to not be okay, and yet be doing great.
If you find value in the things I publish here, it’d mean the world if you’d share it with someone else. It’s the only way this space and community continues to grow.
