Being where your feet are.
On how every great future passes through the present moment.
Last week I wrote about letting the future unfold on its own.
And while the number of email replies I received showed me how much of a shared suffering this is amongst us humans, it begged the question…
What is the alternative?
Because it’s very easy to give the advice “let it become obvious”.
But you know what’s not easy? Actually doing it. Without grounding it in the reality of here and now, it’s just a flippant line as unhelpful as telling you to “be present”.
So here’s where we ground it in reality.
The great irony in worrying about the future is this…
It pulls us away from the present moment, and the present moment is the only place where we can actually take action toward a compelling future.
Dreams. Goals. Aspirations.
None of them happen outside of the present moment.
Every second we spend mentally parading around an unknown future is a second we don’t get back, and more importantly…a second in which we could have actually done something about easing the tension between where we are and where we want to be.
So whenever you’re caught in the middle of wishing things were somehow different than what they are, try this…
Take a deep breath (or 20), and think about the person you’re becoming, the person that is living those future dreams and aspirations, and…
Be that person now.
This is not advice to fake it ‘til you make it. I’m not talking about pretending you’re super successful if you’re distinctly not.
I’m talking about embodying the emotional state of the person you’re becoming.
The future you that is joyful because you have so much to be grateful for.
The future you that is giving because you have so much abundance in your life.
The future you that is at peace with who you are and where you’re headed.
You can’t think, dream, or stress your way into a bigger bank account, better job, or happier relationship. Anxiety isn’t a shortcut either.
But by choosing to be joyful, grateful, and giving now, we create the mental space necessary to actually take action toward wherever we’re headed.
Every great future passes through the present moment.
We just have to be awake enough to see that.
And once we’re awake enough to see it?
That’s when we get back to work.
(Because our future is depending on it).
