If we want to find success in any area - our health, our careers, our income, our relationships - we have to start by over-indexing on ourselves.
A trainer or program can't help you get in shape without your willing and active participation.
Your colleagues and bosses won't take you seriously until you take yourself - namely your work and how you present yourself to the world - seriously.
Your income won't grow until you take full responsibility for making it grow.
Your relationships won't work until you take ownership over their shortcomings.
It is far too easy to index our failures on everyone else while claiming full responsibility for whatever success we may find. This is backward. Freedom is found when we fully own our shortcomings while heaping gratitude on those that help us along the way to our successes.
Some people pass their entire lives putting both their hopes and frustrations into external sources - leaders, politicians, bosses, significant others. And if there's a way to find peace and happiness amidst that type of mindset, I'm not aware of it.
It's too easy (and lazy) to over-index on other people's impact in our lives while simultaneously under-indexing on our own ability to create the life we want. Instead, over-index on yourself. Not only is it the most tried and true path to success - it's also the only way to do it with a smile on your face.
