A lot of us are worried about our jobs and businesses given the current global climate. I certainly know I am, and I think it's important to recognize that this is a normal reaction. Uncertainty breeds unrest.
But there is a particular approach that we can all utilize in navigating the uncertainty if we so choose.
You shouldn’t just envy the craftsman mindset, you should emulate it. In other words, I am suggesting that you put aside the question of whether your job is your true passion, and instead turn your focus toward becoming so good they can’t ignore you. That is, regardless of what you do for a living, approach your work like a true performer.
That quote is from Cal Newport's book, So Good They Can't Ignore You. It's a book I continually go back to for its seemingly eternal wisdom. The title originates from a quote from comedian Steve Martin. Steve's mindset during his relentless pursuit of success over 2+ decades of comedy was to become so good at standup that the audience couldn't ignore him.
We need healthy frameworks to cling to in unfamiliar times. If you're like the rest of us and you're worried about what the future holds, don't focus on things you can't control. Focus on being so good at the task in front of you that your peers, colleagues, and community can't ignore you.
