You're crying, head in hands. Tears are flowing, but the words are not.
Perhaps the tears are from a heartbreak. Or a death. Or a pending bill without a pending paycheck. Or simply from a sense of nothingness.
Now a new scene.
You're crying, head in hands. Perhaps the tears are from seeing your partner walk down the aisle. Or a first kiss on a newborn's head. Or the successful conclusion of a hard earned endeavor. Or a moment of gratitude so deep that only tears suffice as an outlet.
Tears of pain. And tears of joy.
We cannot have one without the other. For if we are to have any experience at all, the full experience is the only one available.
The input and the output. The effort and the result. The beginning and the end. Life is cyclical. And life is equal parts suffering and ecstasy. To avoid the former is to avoid life. We can live in the middle. But that loses the plot entirely.
So the next time the tears are flowing - whether their origin is a place of pain or a place of joy - just remember one thing.
They come from the same place.
